Survival

Please take some time and read this poem by Vuyisile Mashulu, powerful material:

Survival

There are times in life

When even death becomes

A better option than life

When everything good

Appears to be bad

And all thoughts dominated by evil.

In these times even trying to make sense

Doesn’t make sense

When all your wishes perish in your mind

What you have, confirms you have nothing

When this darkness prevails

Your family becomes less visible

True friends emerge like flowers in Spring

But terrible winds of hatred

Sometimes shake them

Often in these times

A sequence of bad things occur

And before you know those close to you are affected

And the worst catches up with the best

In these times you remember the most terrible

You try and sleep them away

But you even struggle to find sleep

And you wish to sleep forever

But awake you remain till dawn

Trying times can destroy the best

But they can also strengthen the weakest

This is the game of survival in life

That we played since arrival in this life

The tale of pain is not yet told

It sounds insane if we try to uphold

The memory of suffering that comes with time

Cos even in our dreams we feel pain

We realize we have nothing to gain

What an awful picture to paint

Amidst the odds

We have survived

We are surviving and

We continue to survive

So much that we lived to narrate the tale of our

SURVIVAL
